day six; a song that reminds you of somewhere

so, not specifically a definable place – but more on the journey to a place.

title: after glow
artist: foals
album: total life forever

somewhere in the middle of the sky at about 8am on the way to brisbane for the wonderful splendour in the grass. i thought i’d prepare myself for the excitement.

i actually ended up falling asleep, but now whenever i hear this track i’m transported back to the stuffy confines of the budget airline. i then remember hearing it live in the mix-up tent at splendour – feet immersed in horrible mud, feeling hot and cold at the same time and getting damn sweaty.

part #6 – saturday night

(i really wish i had been this close…i didn’t take this picture)

I will never again underestimate the power of a jumper. Warmth is a necessity for proper concert enjoyment, and with appendages fully covered, it was back to the main stage to try and secure a vantage point for FLORENCE + THE MACHINE and of course, THE STROKES. Due to very clever time management (or coincidence) we caught the end of WOLFMOTHER and managed to find an even better spot than we had previously. It is unfortunate the original lineup had a falling out/major creative breakup because this new WOLFMOTHER endeavour just isn’t the same. There’s a definite feeling of forcing something, not to mention the subtle contest to see who can have the biggest hair. Finishing quickly, much to our pleasure, it was time to get thoroughly excited for one of the major drawcards of the festival – FLORENCE + THE MACHINE.

part #5 – saturday

(charismatic and THOROUGHLY entertaining: THE DRUMS)

Camping certainly does have it’s disadvantages, the main one being it’s quite difficult to have a shower. Thankfully, we did manage to score one, and then it was on to the main stage without delay! For no reason – there wasn’t anyone we were desperate to see until TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB in the Mix Up tent a bit later in the day – it was just an excuse to lie on the grass for a while. Hearing the percussion heavy JONATHON BOULET and fairly pedestrian BAND OF SKULLS was more than sufficient before we made the trek back to the mix up tent, securing a fairly good vantage point on the side. We had established that we’d need to make a quick getaway to ensure decent spots and a fair listen to THE DRUMS who started halfway through TWO DOOR’S set. POOR FORM splendour folk, poor form.
